Let me guess, your phone’s camera roll is overflowing with thousands of photos. Blurry bath-time snaps, sleeping faces, and messy high-chair moments. You’re sentimental; you’re a little afraid of how quickly time passes, and you want to capture it all.
But when you look at those photos, do they feel like "art"? Do they belong on your living room wall?
The big question many Surrey parents ask me is: "Can I actually take professional-looking family photos on my phone?"
The short answer is: Yes, you can take great photos. But there is a huge difference between a "good snapshot" and a "professional portrait." If you're looking to level up your DIY game before your next family photoshoot in Surrey, here is how to get the most out of that device in your pocket.
1. Master the Light (The Secret Sauce)
The biggest giveaway of a "phone photo" is harsh, overhead lighting or dark, grainy shadows.
-
Indoors: Turn off the big lights! Move your family toward a large window. Side-lighting (where the light hits them from the side rather than head-on) creates beautiful, soft depth.
-
Outdoors: Avoid direct sun. Aim for mornings, evenings or deep shade. Phone cameras can't handle all types of lighting the same say that a professional camera and editing can. It’s why my Whyteleafe Meadow sessions look so magical at any time of day.
2. Use "Portrait Mode" Wisely
Most smartphones now have a "Portrait Mode" that mimics the shallow depth-of-field of a professional DSLR lens. It blurs the background so your subject pops.
-
Tip: Don’t get too close. Portrait mode works best when you are about 2–8 feet away from your subject.
3. Styling is 90% of the Battle
You’d be surprised how much "professionalism" comes down to what you’re wearing. In my Photoshoot Guide, I always recommend:
-
Neutral Tones: White, cream, beige, and earthy pastels.
-
Avoid Logos: Graphics and neon colors distract from the faces and date very quickly.
-
Coordinate, Don’t Match: Choose a color palette rather than everyone wearing identical outfits.
4. Get on Their Level
Stop standing up and looking down at your children. Squat down or lie on the grass so the phone is at their eye level. It creates a much more intimate, "connected" feeling in the final image.
The "DIY" Reality Check: Why You Might Still Want a Pro
While phone cameras are incredible, there are three things they can't do (yet!):
-
Put YOU in the Frame: Most "family" photos on phones are missing one person: You. At Isabella Fleur Photography, my goal is to get Mama out from behind the lens and into the memories.
-
The "Mr. Piggy" Magic: Taking photos of your own kids can be stressful. They often save their best "cheesy" (or grumpy) faces for you! I bring my famous farting pig toy, Mr. Piggy, to my Woldingham studio to ensure we get those genuine giggles—not forced smiles.
-
Heirloom Quality: A phone photo looks great on a 6-inch screen. But if you want a large-scale print for your wall, you need the resolution and hand-editing of a professional file. I individually edit every single image in my signature warm, timeless style so they are ready for your walls, not just your grid.
