How to Handle Bad Weather When You Have a Photoshoot Booked

Planning a photoshoot is exciting! Whether it’s for a special occasion, family portraits, or capturing some beautiful moments with your children, you want everything to go smoothly—from the outfits to the location. One thing that’s often out of your control, however, is the weather. If you’ve booked an outdoor photoshoot, the possibility of rain or bad weather can cause a bit of anxiety. But don't worry! Here’s everything you need to know about handling bad weather when you have a photoshoot booked with me.

1. Why I Don’t Run Photoshoots in the Rain

While some photographers may continue shooting in the rain, I believe that the best images come when you’re comfortable and confident. Bad weather—especially heavy rain—can create discomfort for you and your family, affecting the overall experience and, ultimately, the final photos. Wet hair, soggy clothes, and cold temperatures don’t make for the best atmosphere when you want to enjoy the shoot and look your best.

That’s why, in the event of rain or other unfavorable weather conditions, I always choose to reschedule to ensure you get the best possible photoshoot experience.

2. I’ll Keep an Eye on the Forecast

A few days before your photoshoot, I’ll be checking the weather forecast to ensure that everything is looking good. If there’s any indication that the weather may not cooperate—whether it’s rain, strong winds, or a storm—I’ll reach out to you. I’ll give you a heads-up well in advance so we can discuss options.

3. Rescheduling Is Easy and Free of Charge

If the forecast isn’t looking favorable, we’ll work together to find an alternative date for your photoshoot. I offer rescheduling free of charge, so you don’t have to worry about any extra costs. This allows us to find a time when the weather will be more accommodating, ensuring you get the best lighting, scenery, and overall experience.

4. Hard for Young Children to Cooperate

Young children are naturally more sensitive to cold and discomfort, which can make a photoshoot in bad weather particularly challenging. If your little ones are cold, wet, or uncomfortable, it can be hard for them to focus or smile naturally, and they may become fussy or upset. This can lead to a stressful experience for both parents and children, and the photos may not capture the joyful moments we want. By rescheduling for better weather, we can ensure your children are comfortable, happy, and more likely to enjoy the experience, resulting in photos that truly reflect their personalities and the fun of the day.

5. Why Rescheduling is Worth It

I know it can be frustrating when plans don’t go as expected, but rescheduling for better weather is worth it for several reasons:

  • Better Photos: The right weather—whether it’s sunny, overcast, or even a bit of cloud cover—can make a huge difference in the quality of your photos. Beautiful lighting is key to capturing natural and stunning shots.
  • Stress-Free Experience: Nobody wants to worry about being cold or uncomfortable during a photoshoot. By rescheduling, you’ll have peace of mind and a much more enjoyable experience.
  • A More Relaxed You: The last thing I want is for you to feel rushed or stressed about the weather. Rescheduling means you can be relaxed, enjoy the process, and focus on what matters most: creating beautiful memories.

6. What to Expect in Case of Bad Weather

If we do need to reschedule due to bad weather, here’s the typical process:

  • I’ll reach out to you a few days before the photoshoot if the forecast looks questionable and let you know the situation.
  • We’ll find a new date that works for both of us. I’ll do my best to accommodate your schedule and get you booked on the next available date.
  • If the weather clears up unexpectedly, and we can still go ahead with the photoshoot, I’ll be in touch to confirm the session as planned.

7. Trust the Process

At the end of the day, I want you to have the best possible photoshoot experience. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, rescheduling is the right call for everyone involved. I promise it will be worth the wait when you receive your stunning photos, free from the stress of bad weather, cold and upset kids and frizzy wet hair!
