Lavender Field Family Photos: A Guide for Young Families and Kids
Lavender fields make a stunning backdrop for family photoshoots, but with young kids in tow, there are a few extra considerations to ensure everyone has a great time and looks fantastic in the photos. From setting temperamental toddlers up for success to what to wear, here’s your ultimate guide to capturing beautiful family photographs in a lavender field with your little ones!
1. Timing is Everything
When planning your lavender field photoshoot, consider your kids' schedules. Plan accordingly to avoid any meltdowns (or naps) during the session. If your little one is happiest after their afternoon nap, consider scheduling your shoot for late afternoon.
The best time of year for photography in lavender fields is from the end of June to early August when the lavender is in its peak bloom and at its most vibrant. This can vary from year to year depending on weather and the breed of lavender planted.
If you are restricted on the dates that you can make, find out in advance if your photographer will be editing your photographs. I always touch up the lavender when editing my photographs, so even if the lavender is a little dull it won't reflect in your photographs if you do choose to book in at the end of the season.
2. Keeping Kids Engaged
Young children can sometimes lose interest in photoshoots, especially if they’re not used to posing. Instead of trying to force them to sit still and smile, embrace candid moments. Let them run through the lavender fields, twirl around, or play in the flowers. These spontaneous, natural shots often turn out to be the most beautiful and memorable.
You can also bring small props to keep them entertained. A lavender bundle, a small wicker basket, or even a cute picnic blanket can help your child feel comfortable and engaged.
As an experienced family photographer, I find that most children under 7 years old are most engaged in the first 10 minutes of their photoshoot. In fact, the majority of the best shots happen in the first 5 minutes! Due to this, I book 25 minute sessions which is a real sweet spot to keep the session fun and relaxed, whilst allowing enough time for a mixture of poses and different group shots.
3. Comfort is Key
Kids are more likely to have fun if they’re comfortable! Choose outfits that allow for movement and play. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal since you might be outdoors for a while, and lavender fields can sometimes get a little hot in the summer months due to a lack of shade. Dresses or shirts that flutter in the breeze will not only look cute but also make the experience more enjoyable for your child.
For the boys, soft, comfortable pants or shorts with a matching shirt are perfect. Don’t forget to consider shoes! While sandals or cute flats are great for photos, make sure they’re easy to walk in if you’re venturing out into the fields.
4. Dealing with Allergies
Lavender fields smell amazing, but for kids with allergies, it can sometimes be overwhelming. If you know your child has sensitivities to pollen or certain flowers, it’s a good idea to prepare. Pack some allergy medication or eye drops just in case. You can also consider taking a short break away from the lavender if things get too intense.
It’s also helpful to keep some tissues on hand, as lavender’s strong fragrance might cause a runny nose or sneezing, especially in the warmer months.
5. Safety First
Lavender fields are often located in rural or remote areas, so it's essential to ensure your child’s safety. Make sure they’re aware of the boundaries of the field (if any) and keep an eye on them while they explore. Fields can sometimes have uneven ground, so encourage them to watch where they’re walking to avoid tripping or stumbling.
Also, be mindful of insects. Lavender fields attract bees and butterflies, which are part of the natural beauty, but keep your child at ease and explain that they won’t harm them if they don’t bother them. If you or your child is allergic to bee stings, then it might be best to consider a different type of session, such as a bluebell or woodland photoshoot.
6. Embrace the Chaos!
Let’s face it, family photoshoots with kids often aren’t perfect. There might be moments when they’re not cooperating or when things get a little chaotic. That’s okay! Sometimes the most memorable photos are the ones where everyone’s laughing, running, or caught in a playful moment. Don’t stress about capturing a “perfect” shot—focus on the fun you’re having as a family and the photos will come naturally.
If your child is having a meltdown or needs a snack break, take it! Let everyone take a breather and get back to it when they’re ready.
7. Work with a Photographer Who Understands Kids
If you’re hiring a professional photographer, make sure they have experience working with children. A photographer who is comfortable working with young families will be able to encourage your kids, get them laughing, and know exactly how to capture the best moments, even when they’re running around or playing in the lavender.
Ask the photographer about their approach to kids and how they handle situations where a little one might be upset or not following instructions. A good photographer will create a relaxed atmosphere where your child feels comfortable and the entire family can enjoy the shoot.
8. Fun Poses and Ideas
While candid moments are often the best, it’s still fun to incorporate some simple poses. Here are a few ideas:
- Pick lavender together: Have your kids gather a little bouquet of lavender. This can create a beautiful and interactive shot.
- Sit or lie in the lavender: If your kids are willing, sitting or lying on the lavender creates a soft, dreamy vibe for the photos.
- Family hug: A family hug among the rows of lavender can capture the love and warmth of your family, with the flowers as a lovely backdrop.
- Hold hands and run: Linking arms and running through the lavender fields makes a great natural photograph which most children will love to do!
