What Should I Bring To A Newborn Photoshoot?

If you’ve booked a newborn photoshoot, you might be wondering what you actually need to bring along. The good news is that newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed and flexible, with plenty of time for feeds, cuddles, and settling your little one.

To help your session run as smoothly as possible, here’s a simple checklist of things that can be really helpful to have with you on the day.

Feeding Essentials

A well-fed baby is usually a sleepy and content baby, which is perfect for those lovely curled-up sleepy newborn poses.

If you’re bottle feeding, it’s helpful to bring:

  • Extra milk or formula

  • A bottle (or two)

  • Muslin cloths for burping

If you’re breastfeeding, nothing extra is required, but it can sometimes help to wear something comfortable that makes feeding easy during the session.

I always allow plenty of time for feeds, so there’s no rush if your baby needs a break.

Nappies and Wipes

Newborns are wonderfully unpredictable, so it’s always best to come prepared.

Bring:

  • A few spare nappies

  • Baby wipes

  • A small changing mat if you prefer using your own, if not I have one you can borrow

Accidents happen during newborn sessions all the time, so don’t worry if they do. It’s all completely normal!

A Spare Outfit for Baby

Even if your baby arrives dressed perfectly, it’s always a good idea to pack an extra outfit just in case.

Soft, neutral baby grows photograph beautifully if we include any natural parent shots. Try to avoid outfits with large logos or busy patterns.

Comfort Items

If your baby has a favourite comfort item, it can be helpful to bring it along.

Some ideas include:

  • A favourite blanket

  • A dummy if your baby uses one

  • A muslin cloth that smells familiar

These little things can sometimes help settle a baby quickly if they become unsettled.

Sentimental Items (Optional)

Some parents love including meaningful items in their newborn photos. If you have anything special, feel free to bring it along.

For example:

  • A knitted blanket from a grandparent

  • A special teddy

  • A tiny pair of shoes

  • A family heirloom

These personal touches can make the photos even more meaningful.

Outfits for Parents and Siblings

If you’re planning to be in the photos (which I always encourage!), simple outfits work best.

A few tips:

  • Neutral colours and soft tones photograph beautifully

  • Avoid large logos or busy patterns

  • Comfortable clothing is best

  • Wear layers - it's pretty warm in my studio when I'm working with newborns!

If siblings are joining the session, bringing a small snack or toy can also help keep them happy while they wait.

Don’t Worry About Bringing Too Much

The most important thing to remember is that newborn sessions are designed to be calm and baby-led. We take breaks whenever your baby needs them, and there’s no pressure for everything to go perfectly.

My studio in Woldingham, Surrey is fully set up with blankets, bonnets and a few newborn accessories ready for your session, so you don’t need to worry about bringing lots of props.

The Most Important Thing to Bring

The most important thing you can bring is simply your baby and yourselves. Those first few weeks go by so quickly, and a newborn session is a lovely way to capture those tiny details before they change.

If you’re expecting and thinking about booking a newborn photoshoot, it’s best to reserve a space during pregnancy so we can plan your session once your baby arrives.
